Welcome to Botbyscience!
Why does the wind blow? Where does the rivers water flow? Why is a lemon sour? What is thunder and lightning? What's needed to shoot a rocket? How can we catch a criminal? Why are you sick and why do you get a fever? How old is Earth? The list of your and your friends' questions about reality can continue. But where do you get your answers to your questions? There is actually a source for it. The source is called science. Natural science is a fascinating world - interesting and fun. Science in general consists of astronomy, geography, physics , chemistry and biology. Many physical, biological, chemical, astronomical and geographical phenomena are linked together. SCIENCE helps you to examine how, why and for what can we use knowledge about nature to our benefit without destroying nature itself.
With this website we want to tell the inquisitive students and teachers about science teaching in our school.
Ingvar Stål, PhD, Senior lecturer in Physics, Chemistry and Science About us
SCIENCE IS FUN
FROM CLUB TO OPTIONAL SUBJECT - SCIENCE
- The idea was launched in 2005 with a budget of € 170.
- We started the subject by offering voluntary club lessons to teach science (2h per week).
- The number of pupils was 10.
- From the year 2007 came SCIENCE as an optional subject with a 2-year curriculum.
- Now we have science from GRADE 8 (Sc1) to grade 9 (SC2) with 2 h per week.
- The number of pupils in science is 47. It is one sixth of the total school's pupils.
- Our budget is now approximately € 1500 per year.
- Requirements for students: interest in physics, chemistry and biology and proficiency in mathematics.
HOW OUR LIVES LOOK TODAY?
- We organize a scientific event for the whole school (in September) "Up to the top".
- Science students (Sc1) were preparing to the TekNatur contest.
- Science students (SC2) prepared presentations on Ch.Darwin and introduced them in different teachers' classes (if they wanted it). Everything was culminated on morning meeting of the whole school.
- This year we are preparing (SC2) students astronomy presentations (the year 2009 is an astronomy year).
- We organize (SC2 students) Science days for primary school students.

- We visit and use university laboratories (in Kumpula and Viikki) to perform experiments that are impossible to do in school.
- We invite various guest speakers.

OUR PLANS
- We will start the club activities for primary school students (at Blommängens Ls, Kronohagens Ls).
- We shall begin with programming LEGO robots.
